Just Keep Hanging On

December 1st, 2011

So Operation Let It Go has begun in my home. Hubby & I went through our closets and drawers and donated a good amount of clothing. Now it’s time for me to move onto the kitchen. I have some things in there that I barely use but can’t seem to let go of. The fondue pot that delighted us one time and the hot chocolate maker that my sister gave me. I’m a hot chocolate connoisseur & have used this but find it’s so much easier to make it in a pan on the stove top. And then there’s the other not so small appliance that’s taking up an entire cabinet that I just had to have when we were getting married – The Kitchenaid mixer complete with lots of fancy attachments.

My space hog

Isn’t she a beauty? I had visions of making dozens of Christmas cookies in her or whipping up a lovely meringue – ala Martha Stewart. If I remember correctly, it was pretty much hell to figure this thing out so I’m not even sure if I’ve ever used it.

*Cut to a loud shriek and embarrassed face.*

So, here she sits taking up precious NYC real estate, and I’m still struggling to say goodbye. Why? I guess because this fab, sleek tool represents so much more than Christmas cookies. It represents the kind of dream kitchen/life that I think (maybe) I want to have. You know – a big open, airy sun-filled kitchen where I’m in it baking weekly. True confession - I do not even like to bake.

OK now I’m really shrieking, at least on the inside. I’m constantly telling my clients to live in the now & let go of stuff that does not represent that & here I am with this “in the future” monster. Can I do it – let it go? If I do say goodbye to Ms. Kitchenaid does the dream die with it? Is that what I’m fearful of? I have to ponder this one for a bit. Stay tuned.

Dawn, there is SO much more to do with that lovely machine than bake. I know its all about letting things go but I simply cannot allow you to do that before you explore your options a bit more! Mashed potatoes, fresh pasta, the list goes on…and now I’m getting hungry. Don’t get rid of it yet…or if you do then I’ll take it off your hands is a hot second! :)

Sandra – she’s sitting on the counter right now. I know she has many talents but the real question is will I use them? I’m not quite ready to let her go just yet, plus I’m really feeling like having some mashed potatoes…….

Hi Dawn, when I moved from Houston to England I brought my beautiful Kitchenaid mixer with me because I didn’t think I could live without it. I knew there was a chance it wouldn’t work even with a converter. It didn’t, and 8 years later she still sits in her box in the garage. You know what? Not once in those 8 years have I actually needed her- and I’m a Cordon Bleu trained chef! Of course, I haven’t got to the point where I can get rid of her completely…..

Thank you Dawn. That’s reassuring. My mixer is currently on the counter & waiting for a new owner. Come on Amazon store!!
